Abilympics Ability and Olympics
The Abilympics is a special event, named because it is an Olympics of abilities. It was first held in Tokyo in 1981, to commemorate the United Nations International Year of Disabled Persons. The second Abilympics was held in Colombia in 1985. The third Abilympics in Hong Kong also led to the establishment of the International Abilympic Federation. The Abilympics are usually held once every 5 years, though the gap has previously varied between 3 – 6 years.
The Abilympics tests various skills in five categories:
- Hosts: Hairdressing, jewelry, dental technician, artificial limb socket making etc.
- ICT: E-Sports, computer assembly, poster design, word processing, computer programming etc
- Industry: Aircraft maintenance, CAD industrial design, bicycle assembly, welding etc.
- Craft: Floral arrangement, embroidery, painting, basket making etc.
- Food: Cooking, bakery (cakes) and restaurant service etc.
Hosts Abilympics
International Abilympics have been held in Perth – Australia (1995), Prague – The Czech Republic (2000), New Delhi – India (2003), Shizuoka – Japan (2007) , Seoul – South Korea (2011), Bordeau – France (2016) & Moscow – Russia (2020).

The V regional championship in professional skill "Abilympics" starts in the Ulyanovsk region
The regional championship in professional skills among people with disabilities and people with disabilities "Abilympics" will be held from October 20 to 22 at the distributed equipped sites of educational and professional educational organizations.
This year the championship is organized for three categories: schoolchildren over the age of 14, students of professional educational organizations and specialists. For students, the competition will be held in the following competencies: "Adaptive physical culture", "Beading", "Locksmith", "Text processing", "Artistic embroidery", "Seamstress". For students - "Adaptive physical education", "Web design", "Masseur", "Medical and laboratory analysis", "Text processing", "Tiling", "Cook", "Entrepreneurship", "Developer of virtual and augmented reality ”,“ Locksmithing ”,“ Social work ”,“ Seamstress ”. For specialists - "Crochet", "Medical and laboratory analysis", "Tailor".
It is planned that 118 contestants, 64 experts, 50 volunteers will take part in the competition.
Within the framework of the championship in a distance format, extensive business, career guidance and exhibition programs are planned. Round tables, virtual excursions, master classes will be held online. The ceremonial presentation of diplomas and medals to the participants of the regional championship will be distributed with broadcast on all 8 competition sites in a single center.
The winners of the regional championship will represent the Ulyanovsk region at the VI National Abilympics Championship, which will be held in November this year.
Abilympics 2020
The first qualifying rounds took place today. The championship was opened by the competencies "Adaptive physical culture" and "Software development".
?♂️ "Adaptive physical culture" is one of the most competencies this year, 53 people have applied for participation in the qualifying round. A specialist in this area can work as an adaptive physical education teacher, an instructor in therapeutic gymnastics, a sports coach, a valeologist or a massage therapist.
?? The popularity of the software development competence at the Championship is growing along with the demand for the profession of a programmer. This year, the contestants will develop a data management system for all participants "Abilympix", which will be used by the organizers in the future.
Tomorrow, participants in the skills “Web design”, “Confectionery business”, “Cookery business”, “Floristics”, “Jewelery business”, “Masseur” will join the fight for reaching the finals of the Moscow championship Abilympix-2020.

How are competitors selected for the International competitions? ?
Prior to each international competition Abilympics selects up to two competitors for each skill area where there are suitable applicants. If there are more than two suitable applicants for the same skill area than Abilympics arranges an appropriate work skills competition to select the best two applicants.

What support staff are there to assist ?
The Australian Abilympics team provides for the support needs of the competitors. This usually includes a State registered nurse and several people who are available to assist with transferring of people with mobility disabilities. The amount of support provided depends upon the need of the competitors for that particular competition.
